If your water bill jumped and nothing about your routine changed, water is going somewhere it shouldn't. Here are the usual suspects, cheapest to most serious.
1. A running or leaking toilet (the #1 culprit)
A toilet that runs or silently leaks past the flapper can waste hundreds of gallons a day — often with no sound. Test it: put a few drops of food coloring in the tank, wait 15 minutes without flushing, and check the bowl. Color in the bowl = it's leaking. It's usually a cheap flapper or fill-valve fix.
2. Dripping faucets and fixtures
A steady drip adds up faster than people think. Worn washers (common with our hard water) are the usual cause.
3. Irrigation leaks
A cracked sprinkler line or stuck valve can quietly dump water into the yard. If your bill spiked and there's a suspiciously green or soggy patch outside, start there.
4. A hidden or slab leak
If toilets and faucets check out, the leak may be inside a wall or under the slab. The meter test tells the tale: shut off all water, watch the meter — if it still moves, you've got a hidden leak.
Track it down
- Dye-test every toilet
- Check under sinks and around the water heater for moisture
- Do the meter test with everything off
- Walk the yard for soggy spots
Can't find it, or the meter keeps moving with everything off? That's our cue. give K2 a call and we'll locate the leak and give you a fair fix.
