Clearing the same drain every few weeks is a sign the clog isn't really gone — you're just knocking the top off it. Here's what's actually happening and how to fix it for good.
What's really down there
- Kitchen: grease and fat that cool and harden on the pipe walls, catching food bits. (Grease is the #1 kitchen clog.)
- Bathroom sink & tub: hair bound together with soap scum and toothpaste.
- Toilet: too much paper, or "flushable" wipes (they aren't).
- Every drain in the house slow: that's not a clog — that's a main line or sewer problem (see below).
Habits that keep drains clear
- Never pour grease down the sink — let it harden and trash it
- Use drain screens to catch hair and food
- Only flush the "3 Ps": pee, poop, and (toilet) paper
- Run hot water after dishes; a little dish soap helps move grease
DIY that helps — and what to skip
A drain snake or a plunger and some hot water can clear a lot of simple clogs. Go easy on chemical drain cleaners — they're harsh on older pipes, don't fix the underlying buildup, and can make a plumber's job harder (and more dangerous) when they finally get called.
When a clog means something bigger
If multiple drains are slow, you hear gurgling, or a toilet bubbles when you run the sink, the problem is likely in the main line or sewer — tree roots, a collapsed section, or years of buildup. That's a job for a camera inspection, not a bottle of cleaner.
A clog that keeps coming back is telling you something. give K2 a call and we'll clear it properly — and look at why it keeps happening so you're not doing this again next month.
