"Should I go tankless?" is one of our most common questions. Both are good options — the right one depends on your home, your habits, and your budget. Here's the straight comparison.
Tank water heaters
The classic 40–50 gallon tank. It keeps a reservoir of hot water ready to go.
- Pros: lower upfront cost, simple to service, easy to replace.
- Cons: you can run out during back-to-back showers, it's always using energy to keep water hot, and it takes up floor space. Expect 8–12 years — less in San Diego's hard water without maintenance.
Tankless water heaters
Heats water on demand as it flows through the unit — so it never "runs out."
- Pros: endless hot water, more efficient, lasts longer (often 15–20 years), and frees up space (it mounts on a wall).
- Cons: higher upfront cost and installation, and it needs the right gas/electrical capacity. In hard-water areas like ours, it needs periodic descaling to stay healthy.
Which makes sense for you?
- Big household, lots of simultaneous hot-water use? Tankless (or a larger tank) earns its keep.
- Tight budget, straightforward replacement? A quality tank is a perfectly good call.
- Planning to stay in the home long-term? Tankless' longer life and efficiency pay back over time.
